"Write a love letter to fandom. It might be to fandom in general, to a particular fandom, favourite character, anything at all."
Dear Object Show Community:
I encountered you in the wild a few times before I finally caved and joined the fandom. I attacked some object characters on Artfight in Summer 2024; I watched an Inanimate Insanity fan animatic out of curiosity because a Ninjago fan-artist had made one; I can only assume, though I don't specifically remember, that I encountered BFDI assets at some point in my career on Scratch. But I actually got interested because my friends wouldn't shut up about Battle For Dream Island in the new Discord server we'd made together. It looked cute, and I really wanted to know what on earth my friends were talking about, so, on November 27, 2024, I went on YouTube and watched the first episode.
My first reaction: this is fucking weird. As Tumblr user InanimateInsanityWiki once put it, "all of the characters sound like aliens pretending to be people." For a significant portion of the first season of BFDI, I was struck by how Slightly Wrong everything the characters said was, and this tickled me enough to keep watching. But I wasn't watching it "ironically" for very long. For one, some of the jokes got me. But in episode 2, I hit the moment that I credit as where I realized I liked this show, and in a way, object shows in general. It went like this: the group is tasked with finding a needle in a haystack and presenting it to a scanner to continue. Needle, a sewing needle, has the bright idea to simply present herself to the scanner, and it works. Something about this world of objects that are people, but also, their objects give them unique properties, was so charming to me.
From there, I watched every season of BFDI, II, and hfjONE, my three favorite object shows (because I'm basic). I explored a few other shows too. And along the way, I met even more people who like object shows, some of whom have become my closest friends. I had friends over for weekly II Season 2 re-watch parties with themed snacks. I voice acted in a show made by two of my friends (BRICK Without The S, if you're curious---it is, as one acquaintance called it, "a Google Slides fever dream"). I went to the 2025 BFDI x II Tour with my friends, a trip that I consider one of the greatest experiences of my life. And, like seemingly every member of the OSC, I have my own show I'm working on. It's nowhere close to having even a pilot episode, and I can't guarantee it ever will, but coming up with characters and jokes with my friend/co-writer has been its own reward.
So, what do I love about you, OSC? I love how you're open to all skill levels and production values, from Google Slides fever dreams to entire indie animation studios. I love how you've brought me closer to my friends and helped me make new ones. I used to live my life getting obsessed with things that none of my other friends cared about, or if they did, they were...much more sane about it than me, aha. But not with object shows! As soon as a new episode of BFDI or II comes out, I can message my friends (with proper spoiler warnings) and chat about our favorite and least favorite parts. It's hard to "agree to disagree" with an internet stranger, but when it's someone you know, your favorite character can be their least favorite, and you can still bond over loving the same show. I love your creativity, how you include all different moods and tones. I love your generosity: how animators will share their Adobe Animate files publicly so others can learn from them; how I left the BFDI x II Tour with a button pin and a kandi necklace gifted from fellow fans. And---I still love that you're fucking weird. As my father described it after I explained BFDI to him when I had just started watching it: "it sounds like it was made by very weird humans." It's good to have weird shows for weirdos, and the OSC absolutely does its part.
I love you, OSC!
